Rain or Shine: How to Enjoy Your Juneau Adventure in Any Weather
Juneau is situated in the beautiful Tongass National Rainforest. The Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska is the largest national forest in the United States and one of the last remaining temperate rainforests in the world. That means, on your trip to Juneau, you will see lush rainforest with so many shades of green you didn’t think possible. The towering spruce trees, covered in “old man’s beard” lichen, with underbrush of blueberries, salmon berries, ferns, skunk cabbage and devils club fill the landscape. There are also raging rivers bulging with snowmelt and rain, waterfalls dropping hundreds of feet to swirling waters below. Wildlife abounds in this temperate rainforest- from tiny vols and squirrels, to deer and bears on land then soaring bald eagles, curious ravens in the skies then of course the ocean teeming with salmon, whales, seals, starfish and more.
All of that to say, the Tongass National Rainforest is a magical, beautiful place to visit. It is that way because of the rain.
On your trip to Juneau, you should be prepared to experience our “liquid sunshine”. This post will give you ideas on how to make the most of your time here no matter the weather.
How to Pack for Rainy Weather in Juneau
1. Purchase Good Gear
Most outdoor gear is rated “water-resistant” which is great for occasional rainfall when you are down south. In Juneau, however, you will be most comfortable if you purchase “water-proof” rain gear. That includes a jacket with a good hood, and rain pants. We love these water proof jackets provided for Juneau day tours at Above & Beyond Alaska.
You will also want to pack a pair of rain boots. These might take up a lot of room in your luggage, but trust us, it will be worth it! There are few things as bad as wet feet on an adventure. Pro-tip: Buy comfortable insoles for your rain boots.
An alternative would be a good pair of water-resistant hiking boots. If you are thinking you will do a lot of hiking, it may be better to go with this option, since they will be more comfortable. However, you might have to deal with wet feet if you end up having to cross a stream or experience a torrential downpour.
On the topic of wet feet, wool socks are also recommended to keep your feet nice and warm.
2. Pack Layers
Don’t be ashamed of packing out your suitcase with a variety of layers. Chances are- you will be thankful you packed them! You will want a rain coat of course, then a “puffer” or warm jacket to put under it. You should include a fleece or similar warm sweater which could replace the puffer or go under it if it is colder out. Depending on the time of year, you also might want to pack a base layer of thermal underwear.
A pair of lined, comfortable pants to go under your rain pants is usually the best option. Wearing jeans or bulky clothes under your rain gear is not the most comfortable- though it beats wearing wet jeans!
Adventuring with the Right Attitude: Rain or Shine
Adventuring in Alaska is an incredible experience. The views alone are awe-inspiring just about anywhere you go. That being said, it is still Alaska! It is rugged and wild.
When you are preparing for exploring all Alaska has to offer- be prepared to deal with some inconveniences along the way. No, the mountain you are climbing won’t have a bathroom at the top….but that is kind of the point isn’t it? It’s wild and unique, and unlike anything you can do in most other places in the world.
Juneau is no exception. You may have to brave the rain in order to truly experience all Juneau has to offer. But, trust us, it will be worth it.
The happiest locals are those who have learned to get out and enjoy the beautiful place we call home even when the weather is less than desirable. They just gear up and go!
We see many traveler’s staying at our Glacier Nalu Campground, in Tiny Homes, RV Sites, Deluxe Tent Sites, and Elevated Glamping Tents. Through our observations we can 100% guarantee your attitude and mindset will determine how much you enjoy your trip. If you focus on the rain, or the cold, or the lack of fast food restaurants….your trip will not be as enjoyable.
If you gear up and go see all that Juneau has to offer with a positive attitude, you will not be disappointed and you will go home with beautiful memories and pictures to keep forever.
